LH front oil cooler for 1972 2.5 ST

Can anyone tell me if the LH front oil cooler as fitted to the 21 2.5 STs in 1972 with part number 901.107.045.00 was the same as the one fitted to the ‘68 911R or was it just the RH ‘69-‘71 S cooler (with part number 901.107.046.00) with the brackets cut off and welded onto opposite sides please?

I have found this drawing of the 911R oil system on here which shows the LH cooler with the above-mentioned part number but it is incorrectly labelled as “oelkuhler rechts”, same as the RH one (but the latter has the correct .046 part number):

Can anyone help? A picture of the cooler fitted to a genuine ST would be great.

In this picture of the 72 ST parts spread out on the ground, you can see a bar and plate style 911R oil cooler. The R’s have 26mm fittings and the 72 would have had 30mm fittings. I’m sure production coolers were used along with trombone coolers, especially in the rally cars where radiators were too fragile.

    Thanks Gordon.

I’ve seen that picture before and had assumed that might have been the case but wasn’t 100% sure, although as you say all the parts appear to be from the ‘72 Competition Parts list (the car is a ‘72 MY 911 S)

You’re right about 30mm fittings and helpfully Carpoint make an M30 bar-and-plate style LH cooler so I think this is the answer for my project:Name: IMG_7790.jpg

Yes Matteo left and right coolers were the same with different attaching brackets as you have deduced.

Are you absolutely sure Clyde? Have you seen any pictures of one in situ? I’m inclined to go with Gordon’s assertion as this seems to make sense to me and put myself out of my misery!

    No Matteo I have not.

Just to be sure we are on the same page I believe the left and right in 72 were the same cooler except for brackets but I missed the query re the same as R coolers, apologies.

Let me check with the oracle Hugh he may have pics, he's got pics of everything else

    Hi Dave

It’s been a while since I read Flunder’s excellent thread so yes I’ll do that but if I recall his car was a ‘71 ST (although he did reference the differences in the ‘72s as well in several posts).

Flunder’s post #6 covers the LH cooler but is inconclusive as to whether it was a R type or a serial RH one with the brackets reversed:

As no-one can say for sure (or prove to the contrary), I’m going with the R type cooler which Gordon highlights in the competition spares period photo.
