Question Rear window heating?? 911S 1968

    Hi everybody

Can anyone help me out with the following:

I have a rear window heating switch on the dash but only grey rear window tubes ( as in the pics) so no electric rear window heating?
And ,Is this the proper way to install the grey tubes??

Since you mention rear window heating/defog for early cars , I have been wondering about this unit. I see it on a good amount of 911's in 1968 & 69 at rallye (usually Factory entry cars) .

Here is one on Pauli Toivonen's car at the 1968 Monte Carlo , which was a factory entry:

Anyone know what manufacturer made this unit ? Was it a factory accessory ? I'm assuming it was attached to the inside of the glass versas embedded. Anyone know any details ?

No. 116 , Pauli Toivonen - Martti Tikkanen (2nd overall)

Pretty sure that exposed clip on the back goes under the rubber window gasket and hooks over the edge of the window opening

As per Brett Johnson`s PORSCHE 911/912 book,1967 -1968 911 (page 28) had an optional heated rear window with vertical heating elements.I have one and there are about 80 plus very fine/thin elements with a single stage dash mounted switch.....Cliff

The demister on the rally car was an aftermarket item.
They were a very common addition on English cars of the era - cant remember the brand name though.

Used in cold climate to put a airspace between too clear surfaces and eliminate fogging of the window. The black line is a 1/8" thick rubber with adheasive. Real big item prior to adequate defrosting fans/heaters. This was much better than the Barclays card (twice as thick as a standard US credit card) used to scrape the INSIDE windows of VW 's and Porsches in the 1960's -70's.
