So those of us with a 69S can claim we have the year model car that McQueen kept stateside during the filming and passed down to his son... Wonder what that does to the value

All kidding aside, it will be interesting to see if this incredible sale price reflects in all early S cars getting more attention or if the McQueen cult following was just that: buying one of the most recognizable pieces of his memorabilia, regardless of the item.

My own take on the sale is that the car, as a very nice
    '70 S, accounted for around $80k of the $1.25M.
The McQueen movie car mystique pulled in the rest.
I don't think the sale raises the value of others' cars
anymore than the sale of his house would would raise
    our own home values.

    Insanity but WELL SOLD!

What does this make his 69S worth, $2,500,000?

Ironic that the Le Mans car is featured in this month's ESR calendar picture.

Hmmm, wonder what I could sell the calendar for now?

    Exactly.

3 different bidders that is 2 more than on most car sales at 'market price' where there is only one buyer.

Just one man's opinion, but to me this is a prime example of everything that is wrong with the current global economy. The sale of this car has nothing to do with market prices. I think that the real value of this car was realized during the 30-odd years of ownership by the lawyer in L.A. who bought it from McQueen. The last bit of significant worth was experienced by the Porsche enthusiast who bought it from him. RM's catalog photos of the car with the right-side wiper arm attached backwards looked (to me) like pennies on its dead eyes. Last night was simply about money. It reflected a meeting of arbitrage and piracy.

no offense taken.... But a market is made up of consumers, who are targeted, and will purchase the goods at the seller's requested price. A car with less cache might be targeted for the roads of the US and Europe but this was not sold to that audience..... This car is destined for a coffee table......
