    The Point

    Harvey and Ed . . .

Thank you for your comments regarding 7Rs --- I appreciate them. Nothing like hearing about someone's 'hands-on' experiences.

And thank you, Ed, for the recommendation regarding the tank --- when it gets to that point, I'll definitely contact Mr Allen. (--- And mention your name!)

    I've talked a little about 'The What' that I want . . . but not so much 'The Why' . . .

1059 has a 'point' . . . one that frames everything I do to her, with her. Keeping the car stock/original/as-Porsche-as-possible is my only strict limit. And finances.

    Shows, lap-times, dyno horse-power, absolute speed . . . NOT My Deal.

My Deal is that 1059 has to be totally usable/comfortable/functional --- at least, by me --- and . . . .

    . . . absolutely . . .

    . . . utterly . . .

    . . . dead-nuts . . . .

    . . . reliable . . .

    Less is Less

. . . . I've been adding some of my own touches on the car, for a while now.

First was a personal plate, something I haven't done in years. '1059' was taken.

Next was the license frame . . . a left-over from The X. I picked it up at Laguna Seca, some years back. She never liked going and, one time, when I went by myself, I bought it, to put on her AUDI --- my souvenir, carried by her. I don't think she ever noticed it. After we split, seeing it laying around after . . . I put it on my cars.

Then there's my mascot, lives in the pass-side door pouch.

Already there --- the Swiss key fob . . . not from me.

And the voodoo-striped glove box --- ditto.

I've been thinking about a (repro) factory Meisterschaft decal in the windshield. But it's not a proper Sigla, 'll hafta be replaced . . . so that can wait.

But a badge? Personal, low-key, different. And I love badges. I've got some from events I've attended (actually), and several more that I've had from my Roadster --- old 60s-period stuff. And some others that I came across, picked up, just because. I started looking, a few months back, for something for this particular car . . . like a proper Euro Treffen badge! . . . but, no luck, yet.

But. I did turn-up a couple of Donner Nürburg-Ring badges . . . one Big, one Little. (WAY more about Nürburg-Ring badges here: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ng-Badges-.-.-.

I've never been to the 'Ring. Neither has 1059.

But if I don't put 'em on a car, this stuff just disappears in a box somewhere, or hangs on a wall. Like the Big One. Too old for this car. And big.

But the Little One? Safe guess, from the 60s --- close enough. And small, extra light. I mounted it tonight, so it's back on the road, after who-knows how long, from how-far-away, crashed, fixed, found, rides again . . . with me, now. Like the car it's stuck to.

According to a price-list scanned by Jerry Haussler, Little Ones are for motorcycles . . . but I like small, in general . . . less.

    Less is less.

    Early Scheel 300

Got an e-mail back from Gerrit @NML, regarding the status of the restoration/repair/re-cover of the vintage Scheel . . .

    Hello Rick,

Here are a couple of pictures from last week. This seat is a very early Scheel as used in race cars in the second half of the 60s. This can be seen in the manufacturing details: wood inserts for tacking of the cloth in the front instead of claws (Pix 792/794), hand sewed seam at the upper back rest, single stitch for the vinyl cover, no guides for the headrests...a real racing antique. The sliders are also of the racing type but come from a longer base seats..200, 400 and 500 series(they have been somewhat crudely shortened by a previous owner- see pix 791/793). I can shorten them to the proper original 100/300 series pattern if you wish.
At this point one claw was replaced pix 801 and about half of the slider screws had to be bored out due to corrosion and all threads recut, those were actually not the proper screws. The cover will be completely new, using original materials, the original foam is in good enough condition that a repair will suffice.
The seat should be ready in about 10 days.

    Best regards,

    Gerrit

Glad to hear that the fiberglass bucket is in good shape . . . looked a bit lop-sided in some of the photos. Shame that the old corduroy can't be saved --- seat's gonna really stick out now, in that 40-some-year-old interior. Interesting details about the seat's construction --- wood strips and hand stitching. Also that the seat frames look to have come from another (even earlier?) seat. I'll ask that everything be made early '300.' And no headrest.

I still need to get a bracket to fit the sliders to the floor. Been talking with Stefan at GTS. Next step.

The sliders are a special topic. When I first saw Uli's photos, I thought I recognized them from some shots I'd seen on Edmond Harris' site. We discussed them --- Uli got the seat because of the sliders, in the first place. Me, too. These are the Scheel light-weight type. Odd bit . . . and very light.

I'll weigh everything when I install this stuff in 1059, but I'm curious how much lighter the Scheel is compared to the standard chair . . .

    . . . . and hope I fit.

Glad to have Gerrit do this work. Corrosion/fastener issues, rails, proper materials to re-cover, plus all these photos . . .

    Restoration

    Sent this evening...

    Hello, Gerrit . . .

    Excellent photos --- thank you!

Please shorten the sliders to the proper original 100/300 series pattern, as you suggested.

Since it appears that the seat was not originally made to take a head-rest, leave the seat without one.

Re-cover/re-upholster the seat as you need.

Please take photos of your progress, and retain any original hardware you replace. Also, please retain samples of any materials you replace --- foam, vinyl, and corduroy.

Finally, before you recover the seat shell . . . please sign the inside with your name, the date . . . and 1059.

    Vielen Dank!

    Rick

Rick the seat is VERY light.
