I spent decent dough on Barrett's old car and couldn't be happier. It's a treat every time I get to take it out of the garage and entirely different from anything I have ever driven including modern 911s.

Hmm, I am a true believer that HotRods can be very valuable and great. There is a pulic for Hotrods as well as original cars.
The only condition is that the Hotrod needs to be very very well done, meaning a real project and not Lego type with no plan. With high quality parts, great mecanics and a particular taste for the right period.
I like very much orginal 911s, and I am crazy about those hotrods. I am building another one right now, with lot of respect to the car.
To illustrate I have sold White Arrow for more than 40K$, it is a 3.2 backdated with a lot of prep and nice collectibles in.
One of the thing I'd like to do, is to buy a early shell, make it clean and put my descent 3.0 with carbs in. This will make this car attractive for sure, few money spent, and could sell it at least the money invested in.
I would buy one done this way, for sure. (but I like doing it myself)
Cheers

I bought my car as a hot rod on purpose. I didnt want to "ruin" something else.

I bought my car as a hot rod and didn't care much about originality. This particular car spoke to me better in original config.
I've since converted it back to "correct" and I need to find a hot rod to fill the void.

I say make the best of what you have, just do it 'right'. I don't care what return my car would bring in terms of $$ if I ever sell it.
It doesn't really matter, if I have to sell it cheap, I have a lot of nephews who I would rather sell it to.
Just watched the latest episode of fifth gear featuring MW' s hot rodded 72T and a Singer car. Fifth gear feels that these resto mods are the new wave of the future. Especially when done right.
It is fun to build what you want and not worry about being period specific. The market and people are coming around to the idea of these hot rods. Im throwing my money at one.
