I'll chat with him on Friday. Not sure why the result is less than 100% for me... something about how the metal flakes are sitting in the paint. It kinda looks too "dimensional" for me. But I'm pretty picky about metallics.

Here's what I started with, so it's all upward from 'ratty shell' level to where it is now. http://www.flickr.com/photos/3238570...7632690596226/

Did you use the water based Glasurit?

Yes. Does Glasurit make a low-VOC paint? I assume not.

Yes but I suspect California has taken care of that for your painter. He used 90 Line.

There seems to be an old wives tale that water-based paint is required in California. But it's not true. It needs to be either water-based or low-VOC.

The water-based paints are producing excellent results, BTW.

It's coming. They have had problems with the clears so manufacturers (like Porsche) still use solvent based clears.

As for flake it's sensitive and will flip in a heartbeat. I've seen cars change color with very little movement on my part as I walked off-center viewing the side of a car. The car changed color right in front of me. Needless to say the whole job had to be shot again.

Modern paint guns are an absolute necessity to shoot the new metallics and pearls.

Yes, I insist my metallic paint cars be painted with all panels in place for the very reason of sensitivity and "direction." Had a guy go ballistic on me on The Bird a few years back because he said all cars -- even metallics -- should be shot "apart." I have pretty good color acuity and have always been happy with the results when the car is "jambed" first, then closed up for spraying.

Anyway, back to projects: I'm trying to retain the original (Turquoise #6464) on my newest acquisition -- a '71 T coupe. I'm finding the cheap repaint was done over un-prepped original paint, and the black is scraping off with a nylon tech tool called a "spudger."

Looks like Scheib to me. Predated the ownership of the guy I bought it from. No prep. Wash and shoot. Latch panel got scuffed at least. But they left the plastic DOT tag. My objective is to clean the nasty black paint off inner surfaces, but have to strip the outside. Gotta research the color. It's very rare on Porsches, but similar to the color I painted my '57 Nomad -- Tartan Turquoise
