Not an obituary...
Just another numbers post from me.
Today, my car is 45 years old...
and has exactly 90,000 documented miles. The odometer clicked over as I pulled onto my street last weekend after a quick drive. It has sat that way all week through the bad weather here in Atlanta.
2k miles a year average. Some of these years were very lean, others were extremely high mileage, particularly early in its life.
Some random data points:
May 15, 1969 = Car went into service. Completed 300 mile break in period overnight and returned next day for service.
.
July 1969 - 6000 (!) mile service. 2 months after delivery!!!
Captain Mike had taken it on a camping and sight seeing trip up into Canada's Gaspé Peninsula. Also included on this trip was a stop in Watkins Glen for the Can Am event that year. The car spent its first few years of its life stored for six month stints, as Mike was on duty. So when he was back home, the car was driven in great bursts then put away for a time in a bonded warehouse.
.
June 1971 - 37000 miles. I know that this is right around when the car seized to be a daily driver.
.
July 1976 - 52262 miles
.
Then things slow down in the early 80s when he took it off the road for work. Annual inspections show:
March 1980 - 69285
.
Feb 1985 - 72140
.
October 1995 - 82600. Incidentally, this is around the first time I ever saw the car. Hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago...
.
April 2011 - 83956. This was the mileage when I purchased the car. 1300 miles in 16 years. It had sat at this number for a while due to Mike's unfortunate health situation and familial priorities. I have put about 6k miles on the car in a little under 3 years.
At any rate, I thought a quick tribute to the car and its ownership was in order. Happy 45th!

So it may be a while before you can get more mileage on it- if your weather there doesn't change soon. Crazy.

It's funny, Rick. I have been entertaining the idea of starting a '1969' thread.
Everything 69:
-Music
-War/Peace
-Armstrong on the moon
-Battle of automatic chronographs (Zenith EP, Heuer, etc)
-the cars (MB 6.3, Ferrari, muscle cars, end of an era, etc)
-the races
-world beat, etc
All from the perspective of someone born in 1970...![]()
A busy summer, but not on the car front.
Move - the buy and sell, and the inevitable drama of the actual move. Luckily staying local in the 'hood.
Kids - 4 yo and 1 1/2 yo...
equals
Not alotta car time.
In fact, a good friend let me stow the car away at his place during the whole ordeal. Kept it outta the house showing/move fray.
This spring's service was the usual items plus some minor mods.
+Oil/filter = BPenn 20w/50
+Valve adjustment - Only one or two were out
+Plugs - changed from the old stock/hen$ teeth Bo$ch platinum to some NGK which definitely seem to be hotter plugs = good news
+Compression = all consistent
+Leakdown = 2-3% all around
+Replaced the original tie rods (completely shot) with turbo tie rods. This little change transformed the way the car feels through the steering wheel. Much more positive feedback, less useless chatter. Should have snapped a pic of the originals... they were gone.
+Some minor plumbing of vent lines from the dual batteries overboard to keep the trunk area battery gas free...
Car leaks oil in usual places for a 1st generation magnesium case. Living with it all for now since from a running standpoint the car is in top form for a 45 year old unsplit powerplant.
Gas mileage is still around 20mpg if I drive it long enough to get some reliable data.
On the list are SSIs--purchased, but shelved for the time being. A pinhole exhaust leak in the factory mild steelies on the car that hasn't gotten worse... but I sense it's gonna.

Looks like your car has good company during the move

So mileage is ~90,400 now. And that includes the little excursion I took a couple weeks back of ~250 miles.
With all the spectacular west coast events going on this year, my little trip pales in comparison but here it is
Inspired by all the great posts lately, especially Thomas's 912 in Italy update and the AUS camping excursion, I had to get away in my car, even if it was for a half day.
We've had an unusually mild summer this year in Hotlanta. A few record lows (~60), often couple with some low humidity spells. A couple weeks ago brought one of these special August days, so I took advantage of it. Left the house ~5:30am from intown. made my way north onto some of the better driving roads that begin in the outer suburbs/exurbs of the city. Then spent some time on popular loops in the mountains... these roads are usually crawling with traffic and police on the weekends... but not so at 7am on a Thursday.
I am always amazed at how much better a 911 seems to run after it's been used properly. Oil up to temperature, sustained time behind the wheel, RPM bursts, front cooler engages, etc.
Made it back by lunch in time to check in for a birthday lunch for one of three musketeers at the shop. Spent some time in the Carrera... a perfect Porsche day.
Some grainy, over and underexposed phone cam shots to prove it happened, Rick (LongRanger) !
Fog and upper 50s, right before sunrise
Low light levels + cam phone snap = super grainy
Love this rear end!
Where else but Neel's Gap on 129!
Just outside of Suches on 180
And a quick thank you to all the other members who post updates on your cars and excursions. Still a small minority, but it's what keeps the board alive. I've noticed what appears to be growing number of newbies grabbing the gauntlet and doing the same. Much appreciated by everyone, even the silent majority I suspect

Yes, it's rarefied air at times at the shop, Scott. A real treat!
Good news is my new place has a huge garage, so more time to spread out on the car under my own roof. Almost a 2 x 2 arrangement with an (unpictured) work room off the side. Move the strollers out of the way and there is easily room for another hobby car, much to wife's chagrin...
Still needs some sorting but will be ideal garage/man cave eventually.
