"Is my 900XXX case worth anything?"

Hi, I recently acquired a 1974 Porsche 911 Targa 2.7 . I was told that the magnesium engine case was replaced with an aluminum case using the 2.7 upper parts. Upon inspection I was informed the the case is from a 1965 911 with the numbers 900xxx. Just curious to know if the motor has any value. This conversion was done over 25 years ago by original owner. engine runs brilliant

For ESR reference, there are two threads about this on Pelican. Here's what has already been discussed...

Can't blame you for posting here; that was the only decent advice you got over at the Asylum. (Really loved the blanket comment that your case is worth 11-16k.) Here's the straight dope:

If the matching car is out there and the owner cares, he'll potentially pay you $20k+. (The other side of the coin and one I just LOVE TO SEE HAPPEN is that he may be perfectly happy with his current case/motor and doesn't give a ratz ass and won't pay anything for it. Sorry; I thrive on status quo being upended.)
As a hearty piece of 911 hardware it's worth $6-8k. Please keep in mind there's an excellent chance the spigots have been bored to accommodate 90mm cylinders. That's about $1500 to fix. + any other repairs it may need.

In my opinion the value isn't significantly greater because its a 65 case; if it doesn't match a chassis I don't see 65 owners paying a lot to have a matching year case. But that's just my opinion which is worth what you're paying for it.

Disassemble, inspect, and see what ya got.

    Good luck with the sale.

Yes Frank I think you right. Just thought I would give it a try. I was told by a California Porsche rebuilding shop today that this was a common conversion years ago and he said that the bottom end is bullet proof and advised me to just keep it and enjoy the car. I must say it is bloody quick and would imagine because all the smog equipment has been removed the HP is somewhat higher than the stock 74 motor. Cheers

    Smarter than the average bird...

You did the math and reached the proper conclusion.

(Now that the engine number is on the grid if the matching chassis is out there the owner will find you!)

Hope to see you back here.

I would hold out for the original car popping up and re-uniting the case with the car, I love it when that happens, it doesn't happen often but when it does it's magical! But you're going to need to post the engine number not XXX.

No comments on the apparent different surface finish between 900 and 594?
