I think an anomaly for sure. My NOS are red.

    Great case study for authenticity.
A classic example of consensus and normative versus faithful, accurate restoration.

    John,
If you are absolutely convinced that they're original will you re-plate or paint? Will you stay true to originality or be a good soldier and fall in line?

    Frank:

Given the rest of the car I'm pretty sure they're original, but these cars never talk to you, so who knows.

They're already painted .... who would ever believe years from now they were originally plated ... who would even care! But there's a story there somewhere. Speaking of stories, I ended up with a super rare American sports car a few years back that I needed to have authenticated so I hired an expert to tell me. There was a debate in that world as to how a certain plate was originally mounted in the car, some had rivets, others screws. Some "experts" believed rivets revealed a fake car, others said the same thing about screws. The guy I hired was the real deal. Dedicated to solving the mystery, he traveled to Detroit and found a retired assembly worker who gave him the answer, which he videotaped for the archives. The answer: "Joe found it more convenient to use rivets, screws worked best for me."

I'm sure there our similar stories from retired Porsche workers -- has any one in the Porsche world done this kind of research?

The ones on my car #301829 are just plated also, I'll dig them out and take a pic.
Our numbers are reasonably close in production, maybe there was a batch of unpainted ones that made it onto the production line.

I always assumed they mine were original but had never seen any other unpainted ones posted here on the board.
    Cheers

To be clear, as I'm not, what "color" was the plating originally, "silver" or "yellow?" NOTE: If not protected from the elements ALL Yellow plating, which is sacrificial, fades and then looks "silver" like zinc. Thanks.

Mine, chassis 1744, was definitely yellow in those areas protected from the elements, that is the backside and where the hose made contact on the outside surfaces

    The areas protected are "silver".
