    BaT Description:

This 1972 Porsche 911S coupe is a driver-quality example with a non-matching 2.7-liter engine and five-speed transmission along with a some RS-influenced modifications including steel flares. The car was sold new by William “Bat” Masterson at Brumos Porsche-Audi. It spent its life in Florida, Colorado and Missouri, where it remained dormant for several years until its purchase in project state by the current owner in 2012, who brought the car to its current condition. It is now said to be a good driver, and the current owner has added over 8000 miles since. The car has working air conditioning and can be enjoyed as is, or be a solid candidate for restoration in its original color of Glacier Blue. This is a factory 911S sold with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity along with service records from 1987-1998 and a clean Wyoming title. A spare 2.4L engine case is also included.

Originally painted in the uncommon shade of Glacier Blue, the car’s color was changed to Grand Prix white at some point in the 1980s. Described as driver quality, the finish shines decently overall but wears its share of chips and road marks along with the occasional tape line on rubber seals. Steel RS flares have been grafted onto the rear wheel arches, and panel fit looks good overall. Signs of bodywork exist including in the passenger door, and the seller points out that some panels do not exactly match in color. Corrosion is present in the form of bubbling in several locations including the lower windshield frame along with the passenger-side door and fender. A separate oil filler door was fitted on the 911’s right side for the 1972-only location of the oil filler tank forward of the rear wheel.

The front bumper cover shows slight distortion along with scuffs and a cracked corner. Metalwork is somewhat weathered but looks largely straight, including chrome rear overriders and rocker trim. Rubber trim appears serviceable throughout. Black and silver dished 15″ Fuchs are 7″ wide in the front and 8″ in the rear, wearing Yokohama AVS rubber. The front compartment is equipped with a camber brace and a clean liner covering a stock spare wheel and dual closed-cell Odyssey batteries in original locations. Original Glacier Blue paint is visible inside the smuggler’s box, and the trunk pan shows no visible rust in the corners.

Inside, period corduroy Recaro LS seats include recently-added US Navy Tartan-pattern inserts. Upholstery wear appears limited in photos, though marking is seen on the outer driver’s side bolster. Carpeting is presentable where visible and is protected by aftermarket mats, while door panels look to have been customized in a hybrid of stock and RS styles. The original door pockets and other miscellaneous interior parts are included in the sale and reportedly in restorable condition. The dash shows no discernible cracks or notable distortion, and is fronted by an otherwise stock-looking steering wheel sporting a thick leather wrapping. The original Blaupunkt stereo has been replaced with a blanking plate, as has the clock in the instrument cluster. True mileage is unknown, as the car’s original speedometer was at some point replaced with a later electronic unit which currently reads 19k miles. Factory air conditioning is working according to the seller.

Under the rear deck lies a non-original 2.7-liter engine built by David White’s Autosports of Tampa, FL in 1994 according to included records. Reportedly carried out with the intent to mimic Carrera 2.7 RS specifications, the build used a mixture of new and used parts. A valve adjustment was performed approximately 200 miles ago along with an oil and filter change. Mechanical fuel injection is via an RS-appropriate Bosch 019 pump and a set of lines appear to have been tapped directly into the top of the plastic air box. The seller has driven the car approximately 8,500 miles in his four-year ownership and says it runs well, giving ample low-end torque, quick acceleration and good high-RPM responsiveness. A spare blank 2.4-liter 4R/5R case is also included in the sale.

The five-speed transmission received new syncros along with first- and second-gear dogs in 1992, and shifting remains precise and free of grinding as reported by the seller. Steering is said to feel good with straight tracking and solid cornering, while braking is reportedly firm thanks to stainless hoses and holds up well to hard driving. Floors and pans are original and solid according to the seller, though the underside is not entirely free of corrosion. A second oil cooler was added in the left front to support the right-side original. Some fluid leakage is evident but said to be minor.

The Porsche COA verifying the original color of code 66 Glacier Blue. The car comes with a bound maintenance book from Brumos which shows personal contact info for Mr. Masterson as well as stamps through July of 1973. An original owner’s manual is also included. Service records are extensive from 1987 to 1998 and include the 1994 engine build, but are otherwise anecdotal. Pre-purchase inspections are encouraged by the seller prior to the auction’s close.
