My take is that there is a difference between institutional records, vs random ad hoc abbreviations that individuals create and use. Those abbreviations may make sense to the person making the notation at the time but, to others might or might not. Meaning, not every written piece of information is relevant. Automatically attaching significance to every instance only creates churn when trying to come to a conclusion. I usually ignore those types of outliers in analysis until I see reoccurrence or pattern.

For instance, an antidote of a hand written “STR” on the inside of a fender could just as easily be the owners initials to identify a part meant for a particular car rather than an official reference to some production group.

I think several people are trying to set the record straight. However this is not easy due to a lot of misinformation and misinterpretation over the years. Many of the people that knew the truth are now dead and cannot help. The Factory, if anyone still there knows anything, is not helpful.
In 1972 there were two programs for the 2.7 engine; the 911 2.7S and what was to become the 911RS. So, some engines with 911/83 spec AND 1972 serial numbers exist, but just try and get information about them. Even with my contacts that is a very difficult project.
There certainly could be a book in the making here. I bought the book "The Lost Archive" by Michael Scott covering the 1970-71 period, and found it quite interesting. https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...k-2nd-printing

    small update on 911 230 0909 :

I think I understand that Harry Blumer bought the car from Peter Zbinden to compete in the 1973 Schweizer Meisterschaft season (as I said before). I also said that Harry Blumer bought a factory 3.0L RSR for the 1974 season, but I found out that he first converted 0909 into a 3.0L RSR, before receiving his brand new RSR (chassis 911 460 9053 for those interested in 3.0L RSRs).

Here are some pictures of the car, at Hockenheim, on 31.03.1974. You can notice the different characteristic elements of the M491 option, but the door surround is chrome.

    Now about 911 230 1155 :

This car was described as "no known racing history" when it was sold in 2019, I also learned that it was originally light yellow. On internet, there is the famous picture when the car was silver, when owned by Karl-Heinz Feustel (80s).

If you go back far enough on this thread, you can notice a photo of the engine, in March 1983 (911T1971 had associated it with 911 230 1417, but 1417 was yellow, and the engine bay is silver (so 1155))

    A while ago I posted infos of a yellow/grey S/T derivate.
My swiss mechanic told me always it was a "real S/T Kremer" he once owned.
I now strongly beleive this is the same car and indeed a "S/T".
Same spoiler, same details, same color scheme and the car was indeed swiss registered car.

Now the interesting part, I came across these pictures a few months ago now. It comes from the same race as 0909 previously shown (31.03.1974 at Hockenheim). I've searched as best as I could for the name of the swiss driver who was driving the car (#9), but unfortunately I haven't found anything yet (I hope it won't be long). En

By cross-referencing the details between the 1980 photos and these pictures, I concluded that this yellow car is indeed 1155 (notably thanks to the M491 option present on the car, as well as the rear-view mirrors, which are identical between the photo where it is yellow, and the photo where it is silver).

Two ST have been converted to RSR in 1974. I take the virtual popcorn bag and wait how long it takes to identify both cars and the seller of the cars..... ;-). This will cause again a damage of about 2 Million $ to people think they are owning an original ST....

As I wrote before, all the documents shown in this thread are 30% worthless because none took care for the originality of the cars before the 80ties.

Or maybe this one? although i thought its competition history as a RSR in 1974 is well known (or should be if you were buyer)
