Since 2000, fifteen years ago, quality collector cars are up 1000% or more. That's ten times your money in fifteen years. Amid the rise there were numerous corrections of 30% or more. 300SL's and certain Ferraris like 250 cabs went from 200,000 USD to $2,000,000. Along the way they jumped from 200k to 600k then back to 300k before climbing to $1,500,000 back to $1,000,000 then onward to $2,000,000.
If it wasn't for a serious lack of investment options caused by ultra low interest rates the rise in hard assets would probably have been modest. Who would not trade in their stocks for a solid bond paying 7%? I certainly would.
Many have just given up on 1% bonds and the stock market and decided to go "old school" and just own what they can see, feel and touch; Homes, cars and to a lesser extend art.
On an even longer sight line I hope the long term appreciation in hard assets isn't over. Having said that, I can't think of many cars I own or have owned that I would buy today for their asking prices.
Hoping I have just become an old cogder(sp?) and just don't "get" the new world of economics.

Arguing for those who think value is still out there. Yesterday I visited a garage with six Gullwings inside. KBB would tell you they sell for $1,500,000-$2,500,000. The car for sale at Canepa is worth every bit of it's lofty asking price for its "second to last" status. But for those who are on a relative budget there are cars being bought for under $1,000,000 that need a little elbow grease and in this forums Porsche arena I know of two 67S's that have sold this year for around 100k. Each needs the aforementioned elbow grease but are complete cars. I mention this because there are so many car addicts who feel the window of opportunity to buy their dream cars has passed. They should be encouraged to keep trying. Many great cars exist in the garages of owners who keep them hidden away because they love their country(s) but fear their government(s).
That's a great post, and IMHO...right on the money (no pun intended.)

the vintage make peaked over a year ago the stuff that has been rising over the past 6 months is the tail wagging the dog... semi modern stuff like a ferrari 512m for 500k ? gimme a break... driving this stuff up is the typical late to the party dentists.... now by no means the vintage market peaking and consolidating after such a long run is no bad thing , but if you don't think it peaked a year ago you are just not watching the game of 3 card monte close enough....

    Seller's Description:

RARELY DO WE SEE A 1973 RS CARRERA IN SILVER!! RIGHTFULLY SO, IN 1973 THIS COLOR WAS NOT A OPTION DUE TO METALLIC PAINT ISSUES NOT ADHERING TO THE PLASTIC SECTIONS ON THE PRODUCTION RS'S. AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE IN THE IMAGES, THE CAR LOOKS SPECTACULAR IN THIS PORSCHE METALLIC SILVER COLOR! THE FULL HISTORY OF THIS CAR IS WRITTEN BELOW BY THE COLLECTOR THAT I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS CAR FROM. CLEARLY SHOWING THE LONG TERM FIRST OWNERSHIP (PORSCHE A.G. MECHANIC) AND THE ONLY 3 OWNERS THEREAFTER. THE LAST OWNER HAD THE CAR FOR OVER 18 YEARS AND PERFECTED THE CAR FURTHER AFTER HIS PURCHASE. HE HAS SHOWN NUMEROUS PORSCHES AT PCA CONCOURS AND IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE REGARDING THESE GREAT RS CARS. HE SHOWED THE CAR IN MANY CONCOURS AND WON MANY AS WELL.

THE CAR DRIVES AS GREAT AS IT LOOKS AND IS IN NEED OF NOTHING OTHER THAN NEW TIRES (ONLY DUE TO AGE, NOT WEAR). THE CAR SHOWS ZERO RUST AND APPEARS TO HAVE ALL OF ITS ORIGINAL BODY PANELS. ONE OF THE BEST DRIVING RS'S I HAVE EVER OWNED OR DRIVEN.

    SEE HISTORY BELOW FROM THE PAST OWNER;

"9113601367 is a touring, third series RS and was sold new in May 1973. Actually, the RS was sold as a demo to Karl Conrad, who worked for Porsche from 1958-1976 and the car was sold in Trier, Germany. In 1975 the block was replaced, under warranty, because it pulled a head stud. In 1976, the car was repainted, at the Porsche factory, silver.I was told, by Mr. Conrad, that he was tired of the original light yellow paint and wanted something new, so he chose silver. In 1980, Mr. Conrad came to the US and was given an exemption for bringing the RS over to the states, so no work needed to be performed. In 1987, Mr. Conrad, had the car taken down to bare metal and repainted silver at a cost of 10K dollars, I have the receipt. Shortly after, he sold the car to a doctor in Thomasville, Georgia. The Doctor, Paul Carpenter, owned the car, along with other cars as a pension plan. The doctor sold the car in 1996 to Steve Lisenby. In 1997, I traded a 1974 Carrera and some additional funds to get the RS. I have owned the RS ever since. Over the years, I have replaced parts as needed with only NOS Porsche parts. Mostly trim pieces and interior pieces when needed, but the light setup is the way the RS came from the Porsche factory. I added the factory sport seats with double lockers shortly after I purchased the car and they are original and not recovered. The RS needs nothing and performs excellent. I have an inch and a half folder of receipts that date back to right after Mr. Conrad sold the car. I have entered many local Porsche concour shows and have won numerous first place awards along with winning two best of shows".

anybody know this car well or have thoughts on it ? seems fairly nice other than lack of documentation and the obvious #'s not matching on the engine

Don't know the RS but I did own for a short period the 74 Carrera that was traded for it. That 74 Carrera is for sale in GA now

the description of this one (0068) and what I have seen previously for this car (or at least VIN) do not add up.

It says in the ad that it was "imported as a new car to japan" and was an "official dealer car"

The RS book has it as being a German delivered car - to Fa Hahn in Stuttgart

It says no accident but paint repair history

I have a record of it being on ebay years ago for US$68,000 and in that listing it disclosed it had a big accident when new in 1973 and " replaced the parts that section shows vin number"
They also showed an XXXX out vin area (see picture) and said that "The other number could read inside of xxxxxxx section and it said 0030021. "

The 0030021 number corresponds to being a full 1973 replacement shell rather than just a repair

the next photo is the VIN number area as it is now shown - all the xxxx are gone but the poor stamping seems to be similar (i cant work out by eye whether they are identical or not but it looks close)

I would be interested to see what the production number on the dash shows - there has been some debate over time as to whether a replacement shell has anything there (obviously it was never a "production shell" so there possibly should not be) but others have postulated that i may have both the replacement shell number and original vin (not production number) if re-shelled by the factory)

in any event both this car and the other one they are trying to sell have so many red flags to me (the vin number of the other one was subject to long threads on this board and pelican a few years ago - and they were probably not talking about the same car but it was the same vin and nothing about it was nice)
