Just some more mystery Andy....
It is the car in which I started racing. Great car with a very solid tub! Thinking of turning it into a street rod for weekend use (and to accompany my 2 69S cars!).
Where is the registry located these days? S/N: 11800069
I know the last 2 owners but I want to get the rest of the history and how it ended up in our shores.
Just got my car back from my mecanic - full gerabox and clutch rebuild. I forgot how it was. this is so great :-)
Yanked the engine/transmission to replace a few seals and have contracted a severe case of "while I'm here." I'll eventually get it all squared away. Eventually......

Washed it and drove it 20 miles for a little exercise. Gotta look nice for Valentine's Day dinner, so the valet will put it out front. ;)
... so, I had a local fab it up and I put back together today. It really cuts down on the heat back there. Before this (after a drive to operating temp), I couldn't put my hand on the cross brace for the rear deck lid (between the rear fenders)... now, I can. It's quite a difference.
I went to deliver some parts to my mechanic and I saw some nice things in the garage and … outside, under the snow! Typical swiss weather, actually.
Inside, you can see a 2.4 S in blue Mexico, a white 2.2 S
Outside, you see the 2.8 RSR who belongs to the boss and a 914 on the truck. A very nice red 1967 2.0 S, a 2.4 S orange and other classics.

I bought a new steering wheel on the Mittelmotor website some months ago. A RSR/GT 360 mm «tulipé», which doesn't need a hub adapter to give some space for my big hands… I bought as well an old and true hockey puck horn button in perfect shape. Except the leather! I ordered a new one on ebay for 29$. I changed the leather today paying attention to have a perfect alinement and fixed the spring without any problem, just a little bit of patience. Now, I will change the wheel and sell my Prototypo. I look forward to see my Trudi with this new piece of Porsche art…

- Went to the shop to do some fine tuning on the air screws with a better uni-sync then mine...:rolleyes:
- Checked out my buddy's bitchen Alfa GTAm tribute project...:)
- Took the car for a spirited drive drive...;)
- Ran into my buddy Mike Mascaro and his drop dead Mexico Blue '74 US Carrera up at the 'Grandstands'....
Kind'of'a belated 23rd ownership anniversary drive........... bought my car 2/11/89
Removed the windshield, had the seal replaced and put everything back.
4 hours work because the metal trim didn't want to go back to its place, got charged 343 Euro by local shop.
Good news: no sign of corrosion whatsoever in the critical area, original protective wax still doing its job , went back home before brief snowfall ...
Yesterday I installed my new dash pad, glove box door, windshield, back glass, quarter windows, sun visors, knee bars, door seals, repaired the fresh air controller, bled the brakes, and installed new tires.
Today the seats, steering wheel and new belts go in...
Rolled my Beige Gray hot rod project out into the sunlight to work on the carpet installation...
That's going to look nice!
I finished rebuilding my S brakes on the targa and drive it to work yesterday, then went home and proceeded to cut out my front suspension pan on the ST. I want to feel like I'm making progress in preparation for Treffen but it just ends up in more pieces at the end of every day :(

Took me all of ten minutes to straighten my steering wheel that was ever so slightly off center. Thank you Ed Mayo for providing the directions; no doubt I would have done the reverse and made it worse so I saved the up and down do it over again thing which is standard for me.
Also went to Cars & Coffee Irvine this AM; nice drive but not too many of the regular early 911 crowd there today. Everyone must be waxing their cars and getting parts ready to sell at the Lit/Toy show and swap meet next weekend.
Reupholstered my inner wheel well vinyl with a fabrication for it to flow past the roll bar mounting plate. The vinyl in its regular shape could not get by the bar plate. It was easier than I thought. Cut and reshaped backing, cut vinyl and glued with 3M Weldwood spray on glue.

This early 67 911 has been off the road since the summer of 1991 when the PO decided to do a color change. The paint was stripped and repainted white, undercoating removed & reapplied, entire drivetrain rebuilt including the brakes. Then let the car demain in dry storage until I bought it in 2011. The 911 recieved a new Autobahn black leather interior, carpet, headliner and final assembly. Should be licensed and on the road soon and planning it to be a daily driver.
OK...I know this will kill some of you guys. But here is the story. I planned to work on my 911 Widebody project today but I got side-tracked. My buddy, Bob Marx was having his Carrera 3.0 RS project painted at the same place that I did my 1968 Camaro Z28 a couple of years ago. So how could I not drive my old Z28 over there to lend him some moral support?
On my drive over there, for whatever reason this old Z28 always gets more waves and comments than I ever get when driving my old 911 cars. The Z28 was built for racing and sold only to the general public because the SCCA required the manufactures to build 500 if they wanted to compete in Trans Am racing. (b.t.w. A 1968 Camaro Z28 won both the Trans Am Championship for Chevrolet and another 1968 Z28 won the NHRA SuperStock Drag racing Championship.)
So...OK...I'm prejudiced...this old Z28 is exactly what our early S cars are....totally built for performance. Although it's a bit more of an outlaw to drive than our early 911s.
So...what I did today is have a lot of fun driving an old outlaw Z28...that was built only for racing...that I restored at home in my garage...but is still slightly drivable on the street. And I got to see my friend's 911 go from a Sow's ear to a Silk purse...today...completements of a beautiful paint job.
Good day. Bob will post pics of his project. He is very happy with how it turned out. This pic is of my old Z28 racer after I finished restoring it. It was a good drive.
I'm chasing down oil leaks, so today I sanded the sump plate flat and replaced the oil pressure switch, the breather gasket and the thermostat seal. Also replaced the horn relay!
I LOVE camaros but I love my Porsche even more.

I hear you Tom one of mine as well. In fact when I owned one back in the day a 69 in cortez silver with black stripes I purchased it back from the guy I sold it to five years after selling it. Took mine out for a drive today. Followed a McLaren MP4-12C for a while- first one I've seen moving and it looks great on the road. It turned out to be a mutual admiration society; at a light he pulled up next to me and asked if my RS was real. When I told him it was he and his wife got very excited. Nice to meet an owner of a modern supercar who knows and appreciates an old 911.
installed my new tacho and speedo, a battery switch on the dashboard, swap the repro to a genuine old Talbot visor, sat in and enjoyed.
Snow is here and still.

Today I cleaned off the grime from a weekend at the Streets of Willow.
It was a banner weekend ... I finally got the old pig into the 1:29s, but I still have to shave another 2.5 seconds to beat the RSR clone that's whipping me senseless in GT5. Although, I do take some solace in the fact that I can drive my car across the country in relative comfort and he has to climb over door bars to get into his car.

I have the same trouble with the cars in V4.... No way my street car can EVER go that fast... but then I pass them on their trailers go’n home on the freeway.....;)

resplined the adjusters and lowered the car today. definitely need to roll the fenders out. may need to come up a tick in front, but its fairly useless to try and get it perfect until I can roll it around.

investigated the crash damage. measured all the mounting points for the torsion stuff. they all seem to be the correct distances apart per the Porsche manual schematics. *whew* I'm not really sure what to do. really what bugs me about it most is the mounting point for the bumper is skewed.

i picked my car up from Mike Jacobson who looks after all the mechanical work on it for me and drove it ( back home from his place which takes a bit over an hour) for the first time in over a month.
The car had been away on its annual vacation at Mike's for its service and annual maintenance / upgrade schedule.
So it is really not so much about what I have done with it today but what Mike did to it over the past month.
We bit the bullet on a couple of niggling oil leaks that gave an excuse to get the engine out and a good clean of engine and gear box. They are the nasty small leaks - big enough to be a nuisance but not big enough to demand immediate attention and in difficult to fix spots - past the seal in the gear shift rod into the gearbox, the speedo cable housing and annoying little areas on the cam housings etc.
So while that was done (and while we - or rather Mike - are there) an opportunity was taken to give the engine and gearbox a good clean and the gearbox coated with Tectyl which should last it for another 10 to 20 years and given the fan looked dirty and had not been done for nearly 15 years strip and clean that as well.
the planned major job was to replace all the brake calipers with Eric Shea's masterpieces - new rear (stock) calipers and the Brembo fronts that i have had here for will over a year waiting to put on. Both is looks and performance they are FANTASTIC - thanks Eric i gave them a good try out tonight.
It is great to have it back, and it feels better than it has ever been - just in time to take it to the historic races at phillip island next weekend
and for those who say a report is no good without photos here they are :)

Changed my brake pads, replaced my faulty windshield washer, install a heating system.
Another day working on the project at Markus' shop. Finished wiring up the Carello JODs, rally lights, and reinstalling oil lines for twin coolers. Markus beside the car, and turning lights on for first time.

What else do you have planned
Not as nearly as specialised as Hugh's work there but I did over the last week (it HAS been raining ...):
Replace the valve cover gaskets (top and bottom)
Checked valve clearances
Replaced a few gaskets on the motor (filter screen, oil switch and breather)
Pulled off both front control arms and stripped and rebuilt them with Elephant Racing bushes (latter was quite easy really)
Replaced front torsion bars, indexed and adjusted them and set road height.
I have started now on the front brakes. I am re-building (thanks to Eric Shea's parts and advice) a nice pair of early Brembos to go with new solid rotors and lines.

beh911 - think sleeper narrow body - but its a tarmac rally Group 4 with some modern FIA safety features so the car can be used as intended - and its just safer all around.
Felt and vinyl dash. Felt in rear. Rally pocket in door, rally interior light. Widest rubber (225/235) I can get under the original flares. 2.5 litres with close ratio rally box and efficient twin front coolers. All soundproofing and undercoating removed. I went to «Porsche Lausanne», which is my Porsche garage for my modern 911's. And I had a good surprise. In the showroom, I discovered a 356 Speedster, a Carrera GT and…*a beautiful Carrera 6! About 2 mio. $ of nice cars! The 906 isn't the one Siffert drove, despite the name on the car. But a nice car anyway.
Friday I will visit the «Salon de l'Automobile de Genève», ,maybe the biggest car show of the year, where I should discover the new GT3… I will send some pics. This Porsche comes with a PDK gearbox and active-rear wheels steering!

did a little bit of work today. I rolled the fenders to accomodate the lower height up front. I had to buy an adapter to get it to fit the 5x130 bolt pattern. I need to dial the rear down just a tiny bit I think, but not today. I did bring the front up a tick. I swapped out the rear engine mounts to the wevo style mount. its much stiffer. we'll see what it feels like.... I also got rid of the awful red airbox straps.

might want to check with Marco, those motor mounts were new a couple of miles ago.
I know, I saw that in the documents. the hardware looked like crap, as did the mount itself and the washer. The rubber itself didnt look perished but I got a nice deal on the wevo's and figured why not try something different, especially since the install is so easy and only takes a few minutes.Quote:

I added an oil overflow catch tank... original SWF washer bottle, with red cap.

Secured a flame retarder thingy from an old airbox to the side of the rain shield, and thus was able to use the same size hose from oil filler neck -> to catch tank -> to air cleaner, so no back-pressure issues under load.

I have the correct style strap and brackets, but I haven't done that step yet.
Following my track days at Le Mans Bugatti track, I blow the alternator and the regulator. Removed them today, ordered the new ones.

Drove it into the sun to get the last few wrinkles out of the new headliner... first drive since buying it 6 months ago. First drive ever. 19 feet, I believe. Did not get into 5th.

-Replaced cracked taillight lenses L & R with Euro style (Yellow turn)
-Finished refacing the dash surface with new black leather for: glove box, radio and heat/air distribution levers. Wow ... learned a lot with this one.
I finally finished my front suspension pan! This job is a lot of work but rewarding when it is done right. This was a "rust free" Arizona chassis but it just goes to prove that there can be corrosion lurking in some of the hidden spots. No areas were rusted through and you could tap with a hammer/screw driver and it was reasonably solid but I did not feel comfortable with the appearance. Also, when the car was media blasted, they failed to remove all the media from the front pan so it was holding moisture :(

I received my brand new Bosch front signal and rear lights plastic covers in black, with their new gaskets and rain drains. The front and rear assemblies are under sandblasting. I have also ordered the front signal wiring harness.

getting ready for the seats to arrive tomorrow. this is as far as I got. I need bigger washers for the main seat bracket. The ones used in the past were woefully undersized and barely big enough to cover the hole on the bracket. dangerous. also going to go with black hardware as the zinc sticks out a bit too much. I also had media blasted the part that bolts to the car as it was pretty messy.

there is supposed to be a nut here for the seat belt retractor on the other side welded to that little rectangle. someone apparently stripped it out so I have to clean it off and weld a new nut on. someone had just been using some sort of aluminum bushing through this hole with a nut on the other side.

Hi , yes I made it by integrating my megaphones into a new Dansk two in one out box. The phones where scalloped to fit the arc of the box and the box scalloped to fit the phones, then it was welded up . I needed to modify the internal plates of the silencer to ensure gas routing was as close to standard as I could manage and blank te original inlets. Its certainly not quiet even blanked but is perfectly acceptable for the street on the basis of my usage. I'm making some neat caps this weekend too out of aluminium alloy with litle screws to hold them on. Glad you like it.

you'll be okay. its okay to play around to get the feel of it, otherwise you never will. good luck! :) I definitely had a few whoaaaally shit moments playing around in the SC, but once you get a feel for the jive of the car you know a bit more about what to expect.

when the car is running.. . projects include, final adjust of clutch cable after the clutch assembly weld, toe-in align after install of turbo tie rods, check injectors, sniff for gas in the engine bay and check both warm and cold fuel idle, check all lights/fuses/grounds that I didn't bump anything off.
Taking Fuchs j15x7 and j15x8 to Harvey tomorrow.. Gotta get them out of A. Bauer Repair this morning sometime... to be massaged and swapped. Harvey.. i hope you can feel a little better.
For the '65, put the new cover on the oil tank sender today...

Drove my car with Solexes installed for the first time!
Some words of wisdom to those aspiring to do the same: don't expect it to be easy - these carbs are a world apart from Webers. Solexes are a complicated system and getting them sorted, even after being rebuilt is not for the squeamish. This install took three years and more $$$ than I'd possibly imagined to make happen! Here they are:

Reinstalled the injectors, after cleaning them out.
Installed Rebuilt ECU
Completed attaching switch to brakes.
Spray glue peeling interior body material
Simichrome polish chrome at side windows and soft window tension handles.
Tightened soft window torsion bar screws.
Wire brush to remove old paint and old oxidation from oil cap. Cleaned resins from oil cap.
Adjusted toe-in for new turbo tie rods
Adjusted steering wheel to center when going straight
Check brake lights, signal lights, fog and headlights. Check interior lights. Checked speedo from refastened speedo grommets.
Test drove.car, all good.

This weekend I rebuilt my pedal cluster taking it out was not bad at all I figured out that on a 69 E you have to remove the bolts under neath the car that attach the master cylinder to the pedal cluster.
The hardest part by far was removing that damn roll pin that attaches the clutch to the cluster, WOW! that was an exercise in patients not for the faint of heart. I went through about half a dozen drill bits, there for a long while I wasn't sure if I was tracking through the right area. All told it took me at least 3 hours of work to get that sucker out of there. Once I did, I discovered my cluster had no real bushings in it every thing was wonky, and discovered why my mechanic recommended rebuilding it.
I would also say to anyone who has not done rebuilt theirs on these vintage cars they need it, it totally changes the feel of the pedals.
Along with that I ran a new clutch cable and routed it properly, and I used the old one to judge where to place the stop nuts on cable and after all was said and done I didn't have to adjust the clutch at all, it works like a dream.
And I added a new throttle connector when I was done under neath the car by the transmission.
And I added new motor mounts since mine were toast.
Yeah I was busy.
Now on to tires. Mine are some how not in good shape the car had only sat on them for 20 years, you would think they were still good?
Had my speedo cable (complete) replaced (not just the inner)...... What's PITA!!!!!!

Well, it's finally getting warm and sunny in the PNW. So yesterday I rolled out both the cars and drove them. I hadn't driven a 911 since being in CA last month so it was a welcome treat.
Before I drove my '72S I added something its been longing for since it was delivered new at the Santa Rosa, California Porsche dealership over forty years ago. I bought this "refurbished" original license plate frame at the recent Phoenix Club swap meet :) :

Trying to sort out

Got the call from the transport company that it will be dropped off tomorrow at 7:30 am. Nervously excited that it's as good as it looks... (at least for a barn find)
Replaced the leaking fuel filter (2 days ago actually), replaced the mfi thermostat hoses ( and clamped them correctly :) ), and added a couple of ounces of Startron fuel additive to the tank. Anxious for the weather to clear so I can go for a test drive to see if the fuel additive makes the difference all of the testimonials claim.
Received in a very big box my wonderful exhaust for my 2.8 RSR. Built by Neil Bainbridge from BSMotorsport in England. Closing the flaps of the switchable silencer, the noise should go down from 125 db to 103 db! I still don't know if I will often close the flaps…
You can see the key (5) to close the flaps and the flaps open, half closed and completely closed. Look forward to install on Trudi's engine!

Adjusted the valves...again. I just did this in early March, but some new noises surfaced that sounded like valve clatter. Sure enough, some were tight, some were loose. I can't explain it...
Also on the agenda was chasing down some oil leaks. I changed from silicone gaskets to cardboard on the March valve adjust and some oil drops went away and some new ones appeared. It took a while, but the I found the new leaks were coming from the upper valve covers which had never leaked before. I put the old silicone gaskets back on and still had a few drips. I dug out the original engine much heavier duty 2.0 valve covers, cleaned 'em up, and put them on in place of the corroded 2.2 covers that came with the 2.2. The leaks are gone and the new old valve covers look way better. I can't believe it took me 7 years to think of this.
Also...I took off the PORSCHE CAR N.W. stripes that Bob T. made for me and went with a much simpler motif, that Bob T. also sent me. I got the idea from the "Rally Car" thread. The car looks more like a '66 911 now. I have some 165/15 's on order that will go on my 4.5" steelies to complete the look.

Put some new shoes on the 911 today. The "old" tires were about 20 years old and hard as rocks. Much improvement on ride and traction!

Installed a pair of early 70s Recaro Seats in sterling condition. It was quite interesting getting the brackets to work as the seats had custom adapted brackets that then need to be adapted to my own car's custom adapted seat rails. There was no "plug and play" to get these puppies to work. It took some serious drilling, grinding, carving to get it to come together.
I had a chance to try them out and they were super comfortable.
R&R my refreshed 915, put in an aluminum (& steel) pressure plate, new flywheel and disk, and... pulled out my chunky original sound pad. Replaced the sound pad with the excellent Appbiz "deluxe" model.
Oh, rebuilt CVs. Nasty job. I need a parts washing station.

tire balance... it seems so basic, but wow...what a difference when I got it on the freeway.
I "installed" petrol and tested.
Wheel Balance... the tire guys said the tires needed it. Tire balancing is a project I cannot do myself. I am glad to have had it done.

Getting the boy in the back seat has been an evolving process. I started off with a full infant style car seat held in by a retractable PE Parts shoulder belt. That setup didn't hold the seat well enough, so I swapped out for a tether anchor and a non-retractable lap belt. The key to getting the seat to sit far enough into the seat well was to remove the folding setback from the car.
When he outgrew the full car seat, I put in a Cosco booster and reinstalled the folding seat back. I'm using the PE Parts lap belt with a vintageseatbelts.com Repa harness anchored to the old rear eye bolt. This setup holds him in securely and is easy to remove when not in use. The "Repa" is fairly adjustable and fits well. I also added a chest strap to keep the shoulder belts together in the event of an incident.
The only downside has been that I had to pop a hole in my pristine firewall and deck upholstery. Small price to pay for how much he enjoys riding with me.

Installed my recently purchased sport seat. Seat was rebuilt about 4 yrs. ago and is covered in leather, has been broken in nicely.

Cleaned up my 4.5" steelies in preparation for getting the new 165's mounted next Wednesday, shot the steel lug nuts with a little satin black, and changed out the 195 on a Fuchs spare for an old 165 XZX on a chrome steelie (I'm going to pack a can of Fix-A-Flat just in case).
When I first built my 2.5L 911S motor I did so using a substantial amount of "found" parts from around the shop ... we call this kind of motor a "Bitsa" (bits-a-this, bits-a-that) or a "4-Corner motor" (comes from 4-corners of the shop). Anyway, I needed a dozen plug wires so I scrounged through every nook and cranny and collected a heap of used plug wire sets that I scavenged for plug connectors. I then bought a roll of bulk ignition wire and made myself a set of twin-plug wires.
Prior to making the wire set I check the resistance of the connectors to make sure they were in spec, and after going through about 30 used connectors I finally found a full set of 12 that fit the bill ... that was 2 years ago.
Recently the car developed a "miss" at high RPM and under significant load. It would run fine at part/light throttle, but if I dipped in to make a pass or accelerate onto an on-ramp the car just wouldn't GO like it should. The only thing that has changed on my engine since I built it is the distributor - I went from a Marelli 121B with points to a Marelli 121B with Pertronix - and my research on that end showed the Pertronix to be working perfectly.
Well, yesterday I carved out some time to work on my car and I decided to check the plug connectors/wires. Wouldn't ya know it, cylinder #1 upper and lower plug connector were dead. No continuity and no resistance ... the damned things were totally croaked. The other 10 connectors were soft but still within spec, but I figured since I had a dozen new ones I might as well change them all out. After replacing all 12 plug connectors the car is back to its old self and pulls strong to 7300RPM redline.
The next step is to remove the 911R exhaust and install a stock muffler to satisfy the Fix-It requirements of the California Highway Patrol. What a lame ticket... :rolleyes:
